Prime Minister George Papandreou is currently in the United States - until September 23 - to address the United Nations Summit on the Millennium Development Goals and attend the formal opening of the 65th UN General Assembly in New York (UNGA).

While in the US, Papandreou is expected to hold a series of meetings with world leaders on the sidelines of the UNGA, as well as with US Vice-President Joe Biden and members of the US Congress in Washington.

The PM is accompanied by Foreign Minister Dimitris Droutsas, and deputy foreign ministers Spyros Kouvelis and Dimitris Dollis.
  • Meeting Ban Ki-moon
Papandreou held a meeting with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon at the United Nations headquarters yesterday (September 19) in New York.

The premier and the Secretary General exchanged views on economic recovery, the financial crisis, climate change and regional political issues, such as the Middle East peace process and Iran. They also talked about Cyprus, and the FYROM "name" issue.

Speaking after the meeting, Papandreou said: "I had a very constructive meeting with Ban Ki-moon. […] Greece is and remains a strong supporter of international law and institutions, promoting the eradication of combating inequality, social injustice and poverty. In addition, Ban Ki-moon thanked us for our stance and our active role."
