Six years after the extremist attack on a school in Beslan, in the Russian Republic of North Ossetia in the Caucasus, a new school was launched, funded by Greece and Norway through a U.N. Programme for development.
The new school was named after Ivan Kanidis, a heroic physical education teacher who faced a tragic death during the school’s siege in 2004, defending his students and refusing until the end to abandon them, even though he was given the opportunity to leave.
Up to 300 students – orphans or from poor families – will attend the new school which has a sports orientation and includes boarding facilities.
