On August 12, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation bestowed its "Access to Learning Award" (ATLA) for 2010 to Veria Central Public Library in northern Greece.

The award, which is accompanied by a 1 million dollar cash prize, was granted to the Veria National Library as the "most successful library model in Greece and throughout the world."

According to an Education Ministry announcement, the Veria library was one of the three finalists that had been shortlisted out of over 250 candidacies from around the world.
