On his first official visit after taking up ministerial office, Foreign Minister Dimitris Droutsas is in Cyprus (September 8-9).

Upon arriving at Nicosia, Droutsas stressed the symbolic meaning of the visit since "the Cyprus issue remains Greek foreign policy’s top priority."

The timing becomes all the more important since negotiations between the Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot side have gained momentum.

Speaking to the Press, following his talks with his Cypriot counterpart Markos Kyprianou, Droutsas noted that "Turkey’s role is crucial for the Cyprus issue. We hope that after Turkey’s constitutional reforms, time will be ripe for the country to engage in substantial dialogue without performing any tricks. Turkey is aware of the fact that a solution to the Cyprus issue will work to its benefit, since it would lead to a normalisation of the Greek-Turkish relations and facilitate Turkey’s European course, which Greece fully endorses.

On a personal note, Droutsas added that he was born in Nicosia, witnessed the events of 1974 and in his capacity as Foreign Minister he pledged his commitment to the solution of the Cyprus issue.
