The 16th Athens International Film Festival - Opening Nights will be bringing the best of independent cinema to the Greek capital, from September 15 to 26. Against the background of crisis, the Festival prescribes a healthy dose of optimism. After all, cinema has since its beginnings been the medium of escapism and dreaming of better days ahead.

As always, the 16th Athens International Film Festival - Opening Nights includes two competition sections: an International Competition section and a Film and Music competition section. In the context of promoting Greek cinema, it will also present awards for the "Best First Appearance Director" and the "Best First Appearance Actor or Actress."

Another novel feature of Opening Nights this year is the honorary retrospective of film director Ernst Lubitsch, in collaboration with the Locarno International Film Festival and the Cinémathèque Française.
