Greece's ambassador to Pakistan Petros Mavroidis paid an official visit to Afghanistan in August. The Greek ambassador was received by ISAF commander US General David Petraeus, with whom he discussed the dire situation in Afghanistan.
During his visit, the ambassador was given a guided tour of the National Museum in Kabul by Afghanistan's Deputy Culture Minister Omar Sultan. The reconstruction of the museum was financed by the Greek state.
Sultan himself is a Greek-educated archaeologist and a one-time assistant to the late Greek archaeologist Manolis Andronikos. In the 1970s he participated in the excavations in Vergina, seat of the ancient Macedonian dynasty.
