European Union foreign policy priorities as well as issues of Greek interest were discussed on July 9, during a meeting between Alternate Foreign Minister Dimitris Droutsas and visiting High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy of the European Union, Catherine Ashton.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, the EU official outlined her priorities for the immediate future, referring to the establishment of the European External Action Service (EEAS), the promotion of good-neighbourly relations across Europe, and cooperation with EU strategic partners, like the United States, Russia, and China.
Ashton also referred to the “very substantive discussions” she had with the Prime Minister and national defence and foreign affairs ministry officials, and underlined the support she was met with in Greece, stressing “the common goals and strategy shared.”
• Srebrenica, Fifteen Years After
On July 11, Alternate Foreign Minister Dimitris Droutsas attended a memorial service in Srebrenica on the occasion of the fifteenth anniversary of the massacre of some 8,000 Muslims during the Bosnian civil war.
"We are here to honour the memory of the victims; what occurred here must never happen again," he underlined, stressing that Athens backs the democratisation of Bosnia-Herzegovina and the rapprochement of the ethnic groups that reside in the country.
