Prime Minister George Papandreou signed a civil mobilization order yesterday, forcing the striking truck drivers to go back to work, following a strike that resulted in widespread fuel shortages throughout the country.

Truck drivers oppose a bill aiming at overhauling licensing rules, an obligation stemming from the EU-IMF memorandum signed by Greece. Efforts for compromising fell through since the government intends to table the contentious bill sometime in August, in accordance with memorandum provisions.

Finance Minister George Papaconstantinou said that "no special interest group has the right to hold Greek Society hostage […] no one has the right to paralyze the country."
