It is not a secret that gastronomy and tourism are related, especially in countries with rich traditions and resources in both fields. Savouring the delights of local cuisines makes a traveller more attached to a place and the memory of a taste creates favourable associations. Several initiatives, some public, others private, local or national are all focused on the same target: give a taste of our own Helliniki kouzina (Greek cuisine).

Icaria Pure is a private initiative which places emphasis on organic farming and eating seasonal food. Icarian cuisine has become very popular as it is linked to longevity. Sympossio by Aldemar Resorts is a gourmet touring experience, under the auspices of the Tourism Ministry. Moving further North, to Halkidiki, the Sani Gourmet FestivalA week of food and wine culture is another annual event with menus which reveal features and characteristics of the Silk Road gastronomic trail. Heading South to the Peloponnese, the Navarino Icons, by the Costa Navarino Resort, offers a selection of authentic food products and art objects inspired by the history and culture of the Messinian region.

Another well-known diet is the Cretan diet, also associated with longevity and with roots back to the Neolithic Age. The Agreco Farm in Rethymno Crete invites guests to a traditional farm for a “hands-on organic farming” experience and a taste of traditional Cretan life.
