Main opposition Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA) leader Alexis Tsipras, the
European Left's candidate for European Commission (EC) president, adopted the same position as his fellow candidates concerning the EC presidency, calling for respect of the European election results and protection of the democratic process.
Having met earlier at the European Parliament with Martin Schulz, Guy Verhofstadt, and Ska Keller, the candidates fielded by the Socialists, Liberals and Green groups, respectively, Tsipras spoke to reporters afterwards. He said that "
respect for the democratic process" dictates that the European People's Party (EPP) candidate Jean-Claude Juncker – who won the election - has the right to receive an exploratory mandate and ask for the majority support to become the next European Commission president, despite the fact that Tsipras absolutely disagrees with the positions expressed by Juncker, on a number of significant issues, like austerity and economic policy.
