EU leaders and social partners highlighted the urgent need to rebuild confidence in European integration at the Tripartite Social Summit held on March 20 in Brussels. The Summit meets twice a year, ahead of the spring and autumn European Councils. European workers' and employer's representatives joined the President of the European Commission Jos̩ Manuel Barroso, the President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy and the Prime Minister Antonis Samaras Рfor the Presidency of the Council Рahead of the Spring European Council.

The Summit focused on the launching of the Strategy "Europe 2020" and agreed on the need for further collective efforts to pursue sustainable economic growth, while ensuring social cohesion and quality employment. Greece has taken great steps toward reforming its economy in the last 20 months, Prime Minister Antonis Samaras said in Brussels yesterday, during a press conference after the Summit. He also stressed the need to tackle runaway unemployment, which was especially acute in Greece but a problem throughout the EU, saying that Europe must invest in its human capital since this was the factor giving the Union its competitive edge.
