A luminous art installation at an Athenian crossing has become the talk of the town as well as the latest hotspot for residents and passersby alike: the illumination of Pittaki street, a small pedestrianized street in the downtown Athens.

The project was an experimental initiative by Imagine The City, a think tank focusing on urban innovation, and was backed by private sponsors.

It started with a call to city residents to donate lighting appliances and lamps they no longer used.

The call was warmly received by Athenians: dozens of lighting fixtures (from a glass ball from Morocco to a hand-made lamp with the word "light" written in many different languages) were collected and used to transform the dimly-lit crossing to an impressive art installation.

The result was revealed and duly celebrated during a lively street party on November 30, attended by hundreds of people, and many more visited Pittaki St. during the weekend, while a series of events and happenings are scheduled for the following months.
