Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis signalled for the opening of the Christmas season in Athens on December 11. Sixteen Christmas trees were lit up throughout the Greek capital, inaugurating Christmas celebrations. The City of Athens Big Band and the Athens Symphony Orchestra played carols at the main event, held at Syntagma Square.
According to the programme, 550 musicians and entertainers will be performing in 30 districts across the city from December 11 until January 4. Addressing the event, at Syntagma Sq., the mayor noted that this year’s celebrations focus on the deeper meaning of Christmas, which lays in human sympathy and fraternity, and not on costly shows.

In addition, the City of Athens will set up a Christmas town at Technopolis in downtown Athens from December 20 to January 7.
Under the motto A Christmas Tale in Technopolis, the venue will be transformed into a Christmas theme park with various attractions, including three carousels, an indoor ice-skating rink, a fairytale town, a toy workshop and a Santa's corner. A Christmas bazaar will be set up in the courtyard where visitors will be able to purchase Christmas decorations at affordable prices, mulled wine and traditional Christmas treats and desserts. A Christmas Tale will stay open from 12.00 noon until 22:00 daily, and from 10.00 a.m. to midnight on weekends.
