Unemployment in Greece jumped to 25.4% in August from 24.8% in July and 18.4% in the same month last year, with the number of unemployed shooting to more than 1.267 million, according to a Hellenic Statistics Authority (ELSTAT) monthly report, issued on November 8.

The hardest hit are the under-24 and women, with unemployment in the 15-24 age bracket group reaching 58%  (13 percentage points up, from 45% in August last year) and among women at 29% from 22.1%, in August 2011.

By region, the highest unemployment was recorded in Epirus & Western Macedonia at 28.5%, followed by Thessaly & Sterea Ellada at 26.4%, and Attica (which holds two-thirds of the country's population) at 25.9%.

Meanwhile, ELSTAT also revealed on November 14, that in the 3rd quarter of 2012, the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) at 2005 constant prices decreased by 7.2%, in comparison with the same quarter of 2011, making the summer of 2012 the worst quarter since the crisis began.
