An international conference marking the centenary anniversary of Thessaloniki’s accession to the Greek state will be held at the conference centre of the city’s Concert Hall on October 18-21.
The conference, titled Thessaloniki: A City In Transition, 1912-2012, aims to examine the city’s history and identity through a multidisciplinary approach, bringing together contemporary currents in Historiography, as well as Social Anthropology, Law, International Relations and the Arts.
The programme of lectures and presentations is structured around three modules: Seeking identity, A City in Transition and Mapping the future of Thessaloniki. Columbia University professor and author of Salonica, City of Ghosts, Mark Mazower, and Academy of Athens member Constantine Svolopoulos will deliver the opening lectures.
Conference participants include NYU professor Khaled Fahmy, Georgetown University professor Charles King, Dr. Nora Lafi from Zentrum Moderner Orient, Boğaziçi University professor Edhem Eldem, and Eyal Ginio from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
