As Thessaloniki celebrates the centenary anniversary of its accession to the Greek state, Greece’s second city came up with a further cause for celebration, as Mayor Boutaris was voted Mayor of The Month for October 2012. Following a successful career in the wine-making business and an unsuccessful bid in the 2006 elections, Boutaris won a close victory in 2010. During his two years in office, he has been active in developing tourism, sustainable entrepreneurship, as well as encouraging and improving the city's relations and business dealings with cities in neighbouring countries.
The City Mayors Foundation, also known as City Mayors, is an international think tank dedicated to urban affairs, which runs the biennial World Mayor award. The 2005 World Mayor award was bestowed to Dora Bakoyiannis, Mayor of Athens during the 2004 Olympics, and Foreign Affairs Minister from 2006 to 2009.
