Ctesibius of Alexandria, Eratosthenes of Cyrene, Aeneas Tacticus, Philo of Byzantium, Hero of Alexandria, Aristarchus of Samos, Hipparchus of Rhodes are names that are unknown to most of us. Yet, these are the pioneer mathematicians, astronomers, inventors, geographers and philosophers of the ancient world, whose technological achievements formed the foundation of the contemporary Western civilization.

The Herakleidon Museum Annex hosts the exhibition "The amazing inventions of the Αncient Greeks" running until January 10, 2016 and showcasing functional models of some of the most extraordinary ancient Greek inventions.

Visitors will have the opportunity to embark on a mystic trip to the past through a marvelous selection of exhibits: from the "robot-servant" of Philo and the "hydraulic telegraph" of Aeneas to the astrolabe of Ptolemy and the "analog computer" of Antikythera. The exhibition aims to demonstrate that just before the end of the ancient Greek world, Αncient Greeks’ technology was shockingly similar to the beginning of our modern technology.

The exhibits are from the Museum of Ancient Greek Technology Kostas Kotsanas that operates at Katakolon port and Ancient Olympia (Peloponnese). They were constructed after a long and extensive study of ancient Greek, Latin and Arabic literature, information from vase painting and the few relevant archaeological finds.
