Mario Merz @ Museum of Cycladic Art

The Cycladic Museum in Athens is hosting an exhibition of works by Mario Merz (1925-2003), a leading member of the Arte Povera movement. Entitled “Mario Merz: Numbers are prehistoric”, it concentrates on the artist’s belief that nature is an overriding presence and that its laws, at once brutal and sublime, regulate human activity all the way from issues of survival to social interaction and political action. Presenting material not shown before, the exhibition balances between visual art and written expression, following Merz’s particular way of dealing with key themes in art using lines, numbers and words.

The exhibition comes at a crucial time in Greece when notions of necessity and primary needs are being re-evaluated, providing the opportunity to re-examine essential ideas through the artist’s oeuvre.
The exhibition runs from October 22, 2015 to January 31, 2016.
