Ruling SYRIZA party MP and former interior minister Nikos Voutsis was elected new Speaker of the Hellenic Parliament yesterday (4.10), garnering 181 votes in the 300-seat chamber.

He received 153 votes from the SYRIZA-ANEL government coalition parties, as well as 9 votes from the Union of Centrists, and 28 from other parties in opposition. A total of 113 MPs cast a blank vote, three ballots were rendered invalid, and there were three abstentions.

In tonight’s plenary session (5.10), Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras will deliver the government’s policy statement for its new term in office, including a draft budget for 2016, and open a three-day debate, to be concluded with a vote of confidence to the new government on Wednesday night (7.10).
