Sunday's referendum is not about whether Greece will keep or leave the euro, Greece's Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said in a televised address to the nation yesterday (1.07). He stressed that the government still aims for an agreement with Greece's partners and "remains at the negotiating table."

In his speech, the premier explained that aim of the government is to secure a sustainable agreement and that the negotiations will continue, stressing the importance of the referendum and the fact that the people's verdict is mightier than any government.

He recognized the hardship caused by the introduction of capital controls and stressed that his government has been struggling for months in order to protect pensions. He said that is committed to doing everything within his power to make sure that the current situation remains temporary.

Following a Eurogroup teleconference meeting yesterday on the state of play with Greece, Eurogroup President Jeroen Dijsselbloem told reporters that the decision was that given the political situation, there are no grounds for further talks at this point, until after the country holds its referendum on Sunday (5.07).
