In 2016, the National Archaeological Museum will celebrate its 150th anniversary, but commemorative events begin in 2015. The chronicle of the museum’s founding, its history, character and activities, all closely-bound with the modern history of Greece, will be presented in a series of upcoming activities.

The Museum’s new temporary exhibition A dream among splendid ruins- Strolling through the Athens of travelers of the 17th-19th century is a charming narrative of the city’s monumental topography. Twenty-two illustrated travel publications and fourteen original works of art - oils, watercolors, and engravings from the Library collections of the Hellenic Parliament - offer an image of Athens, as seen through the eyes of travelers, during their romantic Grand Tour to the capital of Hellenism.

Situated in the central Athens, the National Arcaheological Museum is the largest museum in Greece and one of the largest in Europe. Its collection comprises 11,000 artifacts and the building bears the signature of a landmark figure in neoclassical architecture, Ernst Ziller.
