The Biennial Foundation is an independent non-profit arts organisation that was founded in 2009 to stimulate a spirit of solidarity among contemporary art biennials worldwide. Team members are based in different countries and continents and today, one hundred fifty contemporary art biennials run around the world. Greece participates with the Athens and Thessaloniki biennials.

The 5th Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art (2013-2015) is the segment of a three part programme under the title Old Intersections- Make it New, focusing on the region of the Mediterranean Sea. The third part of the programme runs from May to September 2015, under the title Between the Pessimism of the Intellect and the Optimism of the Will.


Apart from the main exhibitions, the Thessaloniki Biennale chose the following parallel events: "Ident-Alter-Ity," an exhibition on the issue of gender and self-determination. (June-July); "HEL(L)AS! Everywhere!," an exhibition of works by Konstantinos Xenakis which engage in a "silent dialogue" with the antiquities, at the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki. (July- September); an Exhibition with artworks and archival material from the Costakis collection, as a tribute to the 100th anniversary of the creation of Kazimir Malevich’s Black Square the most emblematic artwork in the history of the Russian avant-garde movement (May- October 10).
