Georgios Stamatopoulos, designer at the Bank of Greece was announced winner of the Commemorative Coin Competition organized by the European Commission to mark the 30th anniversary of the EU flag, with 30% of the votes.

It is noted that Stamatopoulos had also designed the 2008 commemorative coin celebrating 10 years of Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) and the creation of the euro.

Stamatopoulos said that his 2-euro coin design depicting people dancing in circle around the EU flag "represents twelve stars that morph into human figures embracing the birth of a new Europe." The winning coin will be issued during the second half of 2015 in the 19 countries of the euro area.
