Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras had a lengthy meeting with French President Francois Hollande yesterday and followed by a joint press conference, during which both leaders indicated the need for cooperation between the European partners.

Tsipras urged a "new deal" for Europe. He also stressed that Greece was not a threat to Europe and that the political change in the country was an opportunity that everyone had to exploit. "By overcoming the crisis in Greece, we will give impetus to overcoming the crisis in Europe," Tsipras said, adding that France is a stabilising power in the EU that should take a leading role in the common effort for political change.

On his part, Hollande reaffirmed France's willingness to assist the new Greek government in finding "a stable and long-term solution." He said that austerity cannot by itself be a solution but also noted there were commitments that had to be respected. He called for dialogue between Greece and Europe and said that France will offer its support.
