The roll call vote for a new President of the Republic took place in Parliament yesterday (18.02) and as expected, Prokopis Pavlopoulos - the candidate proposed by Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras - was elected with an overwhelming majority of 233 votes.

Law professor and New Democracy member Prokopis Pavlopoulos was elected as Greece’s seventh president. His candidacy, which needed a minimum of 180 votes in favor, was supported by the coalition governing parties SYRIZA and Independent Greeks (ANEL), as well as the opposition, New Democracy.

The newly-elected President said that the highest honor has turned into the greatest duty and stressed the four principles of the Presidential oath: strict adherence to the Constitutions, defending national sovereignty, protecting the weak and the public interest. He said that "we are struggling with the other European people not just for us, but for Europe itself." Pavlopoulos will replace Karolos Papoulias, whose second and last term ends in March.
