In an effort to accommodate energy needs in Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) and capitalizing on the new reserves from Israel and Cyprus, as well as  those anticipated in Greece, Energy Minister Yiannis Maniatis met (20.10) with officials from six leading shipping companies involved in the LNG sector.

Maniatis urged Greek ship-owners to contribute to regional energy security by exercising their ability to quickly find spot loads (i.e. ready to be shipped) on the international market. Moreover, the idea of investing in floating LNG stations, as a means to boost energy supply in southeast Europe, was also discussed.

The meeting also focused on the possibility of long-term involvement in the business of carrying Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), in the broader market of the Southeastern Mediterranean. To this end, the minister encouraged the shipping sector to look into the matter, committing to help secure long-term contracts with gas suppliers, in case the shipping sector wishes to be seriously engaged.
