The World Heritage Organization UNESCO has invited the British government to enter into mediation with Greece over the issue of the Parthenon Marbles. The British side has had six months to deliberate and answer. If it agrees to take part in the process, it would mark the first time that UNESCO would act as a mediator between countries facing a cultural dispute.
The Chairman of the International Association for the Reunification of the Parthenon Sculptures, David Hill, has written to British Prime Minister David Cameron urging Britain to accept the recent offer of UNESCO. Moreover, UNESCO’s Greek Goodwill Ambassador Marianna Vardinoyannis has also launched a similar initiative which is being supported by the Marianna Vardinoyannis Foundation, in cooperation with the Melina Mercouri Foundation. The campaign is called "Return (the marbles), Restore (Parthenon), Restart (history)."
Finally, on 13 October, London-based lawyers Geoffrey Robertson and Amal Alamuddin Clooney from the firm Doughty Street Chambers - asked to provide legal advice to the Greek government on this matter in 2011 - are expected to arrive in Athens and meet with Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras in support of Greece’s claims.
