In 1994, the historic archives of the Communist Party of Greece suffered severe damages, caused by heavy rain storm which caused flooding across Athens.

It took twenty years of continuous work and the support of an international team of scientists to restore the archives. Today, the archives are not only restored but also exhibited to the public.

The Party leader spoke of a gigantic effort because, although archives of other Communist Parties (Chile, Italy) have suffered similar damages, the Greek case was more difficult as a lot of the material was hand-written.

The archives are considered extremely valuable for Modern Greek history, since the Party played a significant role in domestic politics for decades. The Communist Party is the oldest party in the Greek political scene and was founded on November 17, 1918.
