The University of Crete was included in the world’s 400 top universities (in the 301-350 ranking), according to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2014 - 2015. Universities were evaluated on 4 main criteria: teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.

The University of Crete scored an impressive 67% in research influence (the citations criterion) and did exceptionally well in the international outlook of its staff, students and research departments.

It is noted that the University of Crete was established in 1973 and consists of five faculties and 17 departments: Philosophy, Education, Social Sciences, Sciences & Engineering, and Medicine. It has around 16,500 registered students and 700 teaching and research staff based at 3 campuses.

These university rankings are published every year and along with the QS World University Ranking and Shanghai’s Academic Ranking of World Universities-ARWU are considered among the most prestigious and influential in the world.

Menawhile, according to the QS World University Ranking, released a few weeks ago, the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) was the highest ranked Greek university (positions 441-450) followed by the University of Crete (451-460).
