The newly elected President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker visited Athens on October 3. He met with Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras; a working luncheon, attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos, Finance Minister Gikas Hardouvelis and the prime minister's advisor Stavros Papastavrou followed.
According to a senior government source, Juncker, before taking over his new duties on November 1, as the next president of the EU Commission, required a clear view on Greek issues, such as the country’s possible exit from the Memorandum, the implementation of reforms and the reduction of Greece’s public debt. The same source added that the Greek government sought to inform him in depth, on Greece's overall stance, including on debt."
