The anniversary of Greece’s entry into World War II - October 28, 1940 – is commemorated annually during with customary parades and festivities across the country. The events culminate on October 28 with the annual military parade in Thessaloniki, in the presence of the country's political and military leadership.

74 year old Ermioni Prigou from the Greek community of Himarë, Albania was honoured at the Defence Ministry, (15.10) for her devotion in taking care of the graves of six Greek soldiers who were killed in the war of 1940. Prigou was 10 years old when Greek soldiers had turned her house in Himarë into a safehouse. Eventually, the soldiers were killed from exhaustion and war wounds. Prigou’s father buried them in the yard to protect their bodies from looting. For 64 years, Prigou has been paying her respects by tending to the graves of the soldiers. ‘I never forgot them’ she said in the ceremony attended by the Minister of Defence Dimitris Avramopoulos and the leadership of the Greek armed forces.
