An independent documentary will follow Greek-American ultra-marathoner Dean Karnazes and three other runners, in this weekend’s Spartathlon race from Athens to Sparta.
A run of 246 kilometers, Spartathlon, is already a grueling challenge for the human mind and body; so much more when the athletes follow, not only the footsteps of the ancient messengers, but also their diet, depending on just figs, olives and dried meat. Karnazes, probably the most famous ultramarathon runner in the world, as well as Britons Rob Pinnington and Mark Wooley, and Greek runner Angela Terzi, as they will attempt to emulate Pheidippides' feat, when he ran the distance to ask the Spartans to help the Athenians in the Battle of Marathon circa 490 BC.
The Road to Sparta documentary, directed by Barney Spender, is an independent production that will follow the four runners from the start on the morning of Friday, September 26, all the way to the finish line in Sparta the following day. It aspires to capture the mind-set, preparation and mental effort of Sparthathletes.
