Shipping & Aegean Minister Miltiadis Varvitsiotis referred to developments in the European seaport industry and the challenges faced by European policy in this sector, in his keynote speech to the European Sea Ports Organisation (ESPO) annual general conference in Gothenburg, Sweden, on May 15.
Addressing the conference on "Level Playing Field Between Ports: A Must or a Myth?" he emphasised the importance of ESPO saying that it can and should play a basic role in all future decisions and in the EU policies affecting maritime transport, the seaport industry and European seaports. “We should work together and create a framework of cooperation to exchange our experience and have a single voice. It should not be forgotten that European ports are very important to the EU economy,” Varvitsiots said.
