Candidate Rena Dourou, supported by the main opposition Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA) for the region of Attica, led the polls with 23.79%, ahead of incumbent Giannis Sgouros 22.13 %. In the city of Athens, incumbent mayor, Yiorgos Kaminis supported by the Panhellnic Socialist Movement (PASOK) and the Democratic Left (DIMAR) was ahead with 21.05%, while the candidate of SYRIZA Gavriil Sakellaridis came second with 20.01%.
In the Thessaloniki, incumbent Yiannis Boutaris supported by PASOK and DIMAR is ahead of New Democracy’s Stavros Kalafatis with 36.04% over 26.2%.
In Greece, when no single candidate secures more than 50% of the vote in regional or local elections, the top two candidates proceed to a second round. Next Sunday’s (May 25) runoff will coincide with elections for the European Parliament.
