The Greek municipal and regional elections will take place on May 18 and will be followed by the European parliament elections on May 25.

In 2010, the Kallicrates programme for local authorities introduced 13 regions (peripheries) in the place of the 54 municipal departments, and reduced the number of mayors from 1034 to 325. Local authorities are now elected by universal suffrage with a 5-year term in office. The elections are expected to take place in two rounds, unless a candidate receives the absolute majority of the expressed votes.

Although universal suffrage was introduced in Greece in 1844, women in official positions are still a minority - only 8 women were elected mayors in 2010 and none as regional governesses.

It is noted that EU citizens residing in Greece have the right to elect and be elected in the Greek municipal and regional elections.
