The fifty-eighth session of the Commission on the Status of Women - the principal global intergovernmental body exclusively dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women - is taking place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York from March 10 to 21. Representatives of Member States, UN entities, and ECOSOC-accredited non-governmental organizations (NGOs) from all regions of the world are attending the session. The priority theme is: "Challenges and achievements in the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals for women and girls."

Speaking on behalf of the European Union and its member states, Secretary-General for Gender Equality of the Ministry of Interior of Greece Vasso Kollia talked about the committed "promotion, protection and fulfillment of all human rights and the full and effective implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action and the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development, and the outcomes of their review conferences, and in this context, sexual and reproductive health and rights."
