"The Cyprus issue is the top national issue of Greece’s foreign policy and the constant deliberation with the Republic of Cyprus is its cornerstone,” Prime Minister Antonis Samaras said during joint press statements with visiting President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades on February 7.

Greece will continue supporting Cyprus, Samaras said, adding that he and Anastasiades had a detailed discussion on the resumption of negotiations between the two communities. He spoke of a fair, sustainable and functional solution with an indivisible sovereignty, a single international entity, a single nationality and the implementation of the European acquit. The Greek Prime-Minister pointed that "we have to learn our lessons from the past developments on the Cyprus issue and preserve the conditions for a wide national consensus." He added that "in any case, any solution should pass through two simultaneous referenda."

He further stated that Greece would support the Republic of Cyprus, regarding its sovereign rights in the Exclusive Economic Zone.
