In honour of the Greek Presidency of the EU Council of Ministers, six poems by Greek, British and Irish poets will be featured on posters, in metro trains in the London Underground for eight weeks, beginning on February 24 as part of the annual "Poems on the Underground" campaign.
With themes ranging from love and landscape to history and myth, poems by Sappho, Plato, Cavafy, Gatsos, Byron, Keats and the Irish poet and editor of "Poetry Ireland," Theo Dorgan, the poems celebrate the enduring ties between Greek culture and our own world.
Poems on the Underground is an initiative that was launched in 1986, and the programme was the idea of American writer Judith Chernaik, who wanted to bring poetry to a wider audience. It is supported by Transport for London, Arts Council England and the British Council.
