The
Agriculture ministry has approved the amount of €36.5 million to be invested in the aquaculture sector. Under the
2007-2013 Fisheries Operational Programme, the ministry approved 76 investment proposals out of the 87 originally submitted. These investments, which will create 180 jobs, involve the modernization of extensive fish farms, the modernization and relocation of water surfaced and land-based fattening units of Mediterranean fish, as well as the setting up of shellfish farming units.
In the mean time, the ministry’s draft bill on aquaculture, aiming to enhance the sector’s operation and competitiveness, was put to public deliberation. The draft bill focuses on sea and coastal environment, and the relation between aquaculture and other coastal activities.
