Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs of Greece, Evangelos Venizelos took part yesterday in the Geneva II Conference on Syria in Montreux, Switzerland. In his statement, Venizelos welcomed the participation of delegations from both the Syrian Government and the Syria opposition as "a clear indication that they fully understand the magnitude of what is at stake for their country and for the Syrian people."

He also underlined that "the international community, including Greece, is ready to support Syria in its efforts to get back on its feet(…) , following a successful outcome of the Geneva II transition process" and added that the Geneva I Communiqué should be fully implemented, "on the basis of the creation of a transitional governing body with full executive powers."

In its announcement on the issue of the destruction of the weapons in Syria’s chemical arsenal the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that “Evangelos Venizelos communicated yesterday with the Executive Director of Greenpeace Hellas, Nikos Charalambidis, who assured him that the three environmental organizations – Greenpeace, Oceanica, and the WWF – had been briefed by the Director General of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), in The Hague, who assured them that nothing will be dumped in the Mediterranean during the process of the neutralization of Syria’s chemical weapons (…).
