European Home Affairs Commisioner Cecilia Malmström welcomed yesterday the progress made by Greece in migration policy, noting that "Greece approaches the migration issue in the right way." "Greece has made important progress on asylum and migration policies but there are still challenges," Malmstrom also said in a Twitter posting during her visit to Athens, adding that "the EU will continue to support" the country.

During a press conference at European Commission Representation Office in Athens, Malmström underscored that all EU member-states should be in a position to receive asylum seekers and display solidarity in handling the issue, and stressed that it is imperative to dismantle illegal migrant smuggling networks. Earlier in the day, Malmstrom had meetings with Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and Public Order Minister Nikos Dendias, who filled her in the progress of the revised Greek Action Plan on Asylum and Migration Management.
