The Kalymnos Island State Divers' School has reopened and welcomed the first 23 students from all over Greece. The school, which was shut down in 2005, due to inadequate funding, reopened last November, with the South Aegean Regional Government economic support and the efforts of local agencies and individuals, such as the Kalymnos Sponge Association and the municipality.

As sponge diving supported Kalymnos’ economy, the school, was founded in 1958, by royal decree, to cover the island's needs in diving training, since many accidents occurred due to the lack of knowledge. Experienced instructors will teach students the fundamentals of autonomous professional diving. Attendance is free and the courses last 40 days, providing students with all the necessary knowledge for safe diving and for numerous professional diving applications, such as finding and lifting objects, ports' operations, positioning and underwater pipe welding; all students will be provided with a diving license.
