The President of the Hellenic Republic Karolos Papoulias sent a message of condolences upon the demise of Glafcos Clerides, the former President of Cyprus, who died aged 94. In his message, he stated that "the life of Glafcos Clerides is linked to the struggles of Cypriot Hellenism, who honoured him by electing him President of the Republic of Cyprus. He defended his views with passion; he had a national vision and perspicacity that was acknowledged even by his political opponents."

Prime Minister Antonis Samaras said that Cyprus lost a great Greek today, stressing that Glafcos Clerides was a genuine fighter and a noble politician, a great protagonist in all the struggles of the Cypriot brothers.

"He participated in the 2nd World War, he served the liberation struggle of 1955 and was on the bulwarks in efforts to find a fair, workable and viable solution to the Cyprus issue," he said, adding that "he had prudence and boldness, perspicacity and genuine patriotism."

Government Vice-President and Foreign Minister Evangelos Venizelos stated on his part that "Glafcos Clerides constitutes an emblematic figure for the island Republic. His life is directly linked with the political history of Cyprus. He was not in time, unfortunately, to see Cyprus united, since he died on the day of the conclusion of 30 years from the proclamation of the pseudo-state."

Parliament President Evangelos Meimarakis as well as the political parties SYRIZA, PASOK and Democratic Left (DIMAR) also expressed their condolences over the death of Glafcos Clerides.

Prime Minister Samaras and Government Vice-President Venizelos will attend the funeral of Glafcos Clerides in Nicosia tomorrow.
