The Nymphs of Hindu Kush [VIDEO], a documentary directed by Anneta Papathanasiou, was awarded first prize at the 1st South Asian International Documentary Festival held in Seattle, on February 23-24. The festival aims to promote quality documentaries from South Asia to raise awareness on the distinct Asian cultures and initiate dialogue, bridging communities and creating deeper understanding.

The Nymphs of Hindu Kush -a Greek Pakistani co-production- tells the story of the Kalash women, an ancient pagan tribe  that worships nymphs, gods and fairies, which has managed to survive for thousands of years in the mountains of Hindu Kush, Pakistan.

The film depicts the women’s struggle to maintain their own culture amidst mounting pressure from the dominant Muslims and especially the Taliban,  as was the case with the kidnapping of the Greek NGO member who ran developmental and educational projects in the region.
