The Regional Governor of Crete, Stavros Arnaoutakis, honoured French Professor Jean-Claude Schwendemann, on May 2. In 1996 Schwendemann established an Alsace-Crete Association, to promote and enhance relations between the two regions, and has since gained 1,050 members. He has been visiting the island for the past 32 years, while he also hosts groups of businessmen and teachers in theme events he organizes.
"Amidst a difficult situation for your country we stand by you, we are all Greeks," said Schwendemann, who expressed optimism that Greece – that knows how to fight - would overcome the crisis with the help of everyone. Greek hospitality and alternative tourism, he added, can set the path for Greece’s recovery.
