Today, May 9, is Europe Day and the European Union celebrates the 62nd anniversary of the Schuman Declaration, with the motto Growing stronger together. On May 9, 1950, French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman presented a proposal for the creation of a 'united' Europe. This proposal, known as the Schuman Declaration, is considered to be the beginning of the creation of what is now the European Union. The Europe Day anniversary is an occasion for activities and festivities that bring Europe closer to its citizens and the peoples of the Union closer to one another.

In Greece, the European Parliament office in Athens and the European Commission Representation in Greece are holding a day conference dedicated on Europe Day headed Europe Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow: Local Government and European Perspective.

In parallel, a workshop titled We are present, we Ensure the Future will take place in the framework of the 2012 European Year for Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations, aiming to raise awareness of the contribution that older people make to society.

The Europe Direct Hellas information network will also run several events in Thessaloniki, Heraklion, Lamia, Corfu, Komotini, Ioannina and Karditsa.
