Addressing a session of ruling PASOK’s parliamentary group yesterday in Parliament, Prime Minister George Papandreou announced that the government would hold a confidence vote and a referendum on the new EU deal on Greece’s economy, stressing that the decision on whether to adopt the deal or not would be taken by voters.

"Let each Greek person decide; with a ballot paper in his hand, let each person decide for his country and for himself," said Papandreou, noting that he had faith in Greeks making the right decision. The confidence vote is to take place on Friday evening, following three days of parliamentary debate, while the referendum would be held later, either in December or in January as Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos and Justice Minister Haris Kastanidis said yesterday.
