Rodrigo Castelan Carlson and Anastasia Spiliopoulou, researchers from the Technical University of Crete maintain that the best way to deal with traffic is not by constructing new highways, but rather controlling traffic through soft measures. They propose to do this through a local feedback controller using variable speed limits. Their proposal secured them the gold medal in the Young European Arena of Research 2010 competition, for the Mobility and Intermodality pillar of the competition.
