One of the most unusual archaeological sites in Greece, the Petrokopio quarry can be found on the island of Fourni in the eastern Aegean’s sea.
On the small gulf of Petrokopio lies an ancient marble quarry which is a unique monument of ancient Greek industry and one of the best preserved.
Marbles from the quarry were used in the buildings of Miletus, an element that shows a direct link between the island and the metropolitan centre of Ionia in Asia Minor. Today, the area is full of scattered marble pieces and remains of columns, found right next to the incredible crystal clear blue waters of Petrokopio beach.
