The annual Armata Festival kicked off yesterday (September 6) on the Argosaronic island of Spetses and will run until September 12.

Since 1931, the naval battle of Spetses -which took place on September 8, 1822- has been reenacted in an attempt to honour the contribution of the Hellenic naval forces during the Greek War of Independence (1821-1828).

The festival’s highlight is on Saturday (September 11) with the reenactment of the historic Greek-Turkish naval battle, where a model ship is set on fire among a massive firework display. The weeklong celebrations include concerts, exhibitions and many other cultural events.
